HEALTH: Can't Live without it!
I am sure we would all agree that good health is one of the most important, if not the most important, thing in our lives. The better we feel physically, mentally and emotionally, the better we perform in all aspects of our lives. The human body is designed to be moving, to be active. Daily activity is good for us and helps to keep us healthy as long as it is the right kind of activity. It is important for each of us to learn the proper amounts, frequency and duration of activity or exercise to maintain or improve our health. I found the content of the following link 30 minute exercise to be an interesting read. It is sometimes human nature to think if a little bit is good for us, then more is even better for us. Not always true in exercise or physical work outs. It definitely is possible to over train or to exercise too strenuously resulting in physical damage of joints, muscle, tendons, etc. Although, if you are like me, most of us will not have to worry about exercising too much. But, performing the exercises correctly is extremely important in protecting the body. Many people work jobs that are very physical, or may require many repetitive movements, or force them into poor postural positions which can be harmful to the body in the long term. A good healthy remedy for this is regular, intelligent exercise. Today, we have all kinds of resources for learning proper exercise ; e.g., from television programs, DVD programs we can purchase, local gyms with trainers, physical therapists, etc. But, be careful to educate yourself first before starting an exercise program. Regular activity and exercise is very good for mental and emotional health as well; and, of course, proper nutrition is extremely important to all aspects of good health. These are topics for future blogs.
Innovation for an Ailing Heart
The phone call came late at night. My mom was at the hospital with my dad, he just had a heart attack. He experienced a shooting pain down his arm earlier that evening. To my mom's credit she suggested they go the emergency room, based on her concern, intuition, or just to be sure it wasn't something serious. That decision saved my dad's life. He had a massive heart attack and just hours after being admitted to the hospital he was headed to the operating room for major bypass surgery. This situation is not uncommon. In fact, the doctor that performed my dad's surgery does four bypass procedures a day. For my family, we have a happy ending and my dad is doing great over five years later. Some families are not so fortunate and I express my condolences.
The point to my post today is I was eager to read the article in the Wall Street Journal titled Novel Cure for Ailing Hearts by Gautam Naik. The article discusses breakthroughs in using nanotechnology to repair heart tissue. Experiments in animals have been successful and human trials are forthcoming. I suggest reading this article and passing it on to anyone who has dealt with heart health issues in their family as a reassurance technology will continue to redefine treatment plans and our healthcare system as we know it.

A GOOD WEEK
This past week has been a good week for the team at CrossTx. Lots of new software features developed and published, excellent team meetings, lots of energy, networking and interacting with people doing the same things outside of CrossTx. I especially enjoyed all the interactions with very smart and experienced people we met at meetings this week. A few days ago, some of us from the CrossTx team attended a Montana Programmers meeting in Missoula, Montana. Great meeting, especially for someone like myself who is just getting his toes wet in the world of technology "startups". The big plus was having Brad Feld as a guest speaker. I am a follower of Brad's blog, FeldThoughts, especially his occasional blogs on fine art. Brad was in town to run the Missoula Marathon. He is a dedicated runner with the goal to run a marathon in every state. Brad is an extremely experienced and successful entrepreneur and co-founder and managing director of the Foundry Group located in Boulder, Colorado. Rob Irizarry, an experienced entrepreneur, located in Bozeman, Montana invited Brad to speak to the group and Brad immediately accepted. Brad provided a two hour talk on real world information on startup communities and eco-systems necessary to spawn new business and startups. Lots of good energy!
Some of our team members also attended a STARTUP OPPORTUNITY WORKSHOP: Leveraging Montana's Entrepreneurial Network conference in Bozeman, Montana. This meeting was sponsored by U.S. Senator Jon Tester and held at Montana State University. The speaker roster was impressive: Dr. Brett Baker, Founder, President and CEO of Microbion Corporation; Mayor Sean Becker; Dr. Waded Cruzado, President of Montana State University; David Ethridge, Senior Vice President and Head of the Capital Markets Group at New York Stock Exchange Euronext; Tony James, President and COO at The Blackstone Group; Kevin Laws, founder and Chairman of Vast.com, Inc.; Dave Morin, co-Founder and CEO of Path; Trevor Loy, founder and General Partner of Flywheel Ventures; Jennifer Shryock, Director of Resume Manager at Submittable; Diane Smith, entrepreneur and author of the TheNewRural.com; Jeremy Smith, CSO at SecondMarket; Josh Spitzer, CFO for Schedulicity and David Vap, Group Vice President for Product Development at Oracle in Bozeman. Top-notch presentations were given, excellent Q & A and lots of networking and discussions. All in all, a good energy building week for the CrossTx team.

Healthcare Costs Projected to Rise
This latest article, Steep Rise in Health Costs Projected in the Wall Street Journal by Louise Radnofsky discusses the current trend in US healthcare spending. According to the article, health-care spending has softened or slowed but, this is expected to change in 2014 when the health-care law starts to take effect. I find the most staggering statistic quoted from the article to be "By 2021, health-care spending is likely to be nearly a fifth of the U.S. economy, at 19.6% of gross domestic product..."
